Ramuwan Festival unites Cham families in remembrance and prayer

Saturday, March 1, 2025 | 16:51:02

-This year, the Cham ethnic people’s Ramuwan Festival runs from February 28 to March 29. It’s the most important festival for the Cham Bani community, featuring fasting, prayers, ancestral remembrance, grave visits, sports, and cultural activities.

Locals in Phan Hoa commune, Bac Binh district, visits their ancestors’ graves in 2023.

During Ramuwan, Ton Thi Mong Loan’s family in Binh Thuan, like other Cham Bani families, cleans their home and prepares traditional cakes, fruits, and other offerings for ancestral worship and grave visits.

"Our family prepares ginger cakes for Ramuwan little by little as the festival nears. Though simple, made with just flour and duck eggs, they require great care. Still, every family keeps this tradition," said Loan.

"Along with ginger cakes, we make a few other dishes. Before honoring our ancestors, we always visit their graves first," she added.

The grave-visiting ritual opens Ramuwan, with each family and village taking part. For the Cham, it’s a sacred moment to honor their ancestors. Afterward, families invite their ancestors to enjoy the festival atmosphere and pray for peace, health, and prosperity. No matter how busy they are, Cham people always return home for this tradition. Ton That Dinh, who lives in Dong Nai province, never misses it.

"No matter how far away I work, I always return home for Ramuwan. It’s a once-a-year tradition, so I make the effort to reunite with my family, visit my ancestors’ graves and pray for their blessings," said Dinh.

Unlike Cham Islamic people, who fast throughout Ramadan, only Cham Bani clergymen observe fasting and spiritual rites during Ramuwan. They stay in the mosque, pray, and prepare the ceremonial space with scriptures, traditional attire, and ritual items.

A family in Binh Thang village, Phan Hoa commune, renovates their home for Ramuwan.

Gru Sa, head of the mosque in Phan Hoa commune, Bac Binh district, said that Ramuwan is a time for people to pay tribute to their ancestors.

"During this month, families invite their ancestors' spirits to the temple, where they are remembered and honored with offerings," he said.

Binh Thuan province is home to more than 40,000 Cham people, half of them Cham Bani. Life has improved for ethnic minorities, allowing them to celebrate Ramuwan more solemnly.

Luu Van Be, a local resident, said that "support from the Party and State has stabilized our work, improved our lives, and allowed us to prepare better ancestral offerings."
